Alessio Romagnoli has already drawn comparisons to football legends at his young age.
Sampdoria defender Alessio Romagnoli was a hot target of both Arsenal and Chelsea, but now it looks like he’ll be signing on with a Serie A powerhouse instead of the Premier League juggernauts.
According to the Daily Star, Romagnoli has undergone a medical with AC Milan ahead of a transfer after both Arsenal and Chelsea decided to drop their pursuit of the 20-year-old Italian rising star. If finalized, the deal between Sampdoria and AC Milan is expected to go for £17.8 million.
The Daily Star reported that Chelsea viewed Romagnoli as a possible replacement for Mohamed Salah while Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was believed to have an offer in the works.
Eurosport considers the U-21 star to be an “elegant, versatile, and composed left-footed centre-back, with good technique and confident ball-playing ability” with the ability to play as a left-sided full-back as well. The Daily Star wrote that Romagnoli has even drawn comparisons to legendary Italian defender Alessandro Nesta.
On AC Milan’s official Twitter account, Romagnoli stated, “I want to give the first team a boost and I will be looking to do my best here.”
Romagnoli signed a new 4-year contract with Roma in May of last year but ended up playing the majority of the 2014-15 season on loan for Sampdoria. While with Sampdoria, Romagnoli recorded a career-high two league goals and played his first full season after previously making just 13 appearances in his first two years with Roma.
