Arsenal are set to ramp up their summer spending once more, with the Daily Mail reporting that the Gunners are closing in on a £12 million deal for teenage Southampton right back Calum Chambers.
The 19 year-old, who has made just 21 senior league appearances for the Saints but is rated as one of England’s most talented young players, would arrive to provide competition for new signing Mathieu Debuchy, who has joined from Newcastle United, whilst would also be likely to be Arsene Wenger’s long term option in that position.
Southampton, having already lost Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana this summer, will be keen not to lose another home-grown star, but they may to choose to cash in on Chambers due to already having right back Nathaniel Clyne at the club.
The move could also sound the death knell for right back Carl Jenkinson’s Arsenal career, with the former Charlton Athletic man likely to drop down to third choice for his position should the deal for Chambers go through.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been keen to snap up young talents from St. Mary’s in the past, with key first team players Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain both having arrived at the Emirates Stadium having made waves on the South Coast.
