Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, according to Spanish source Sport.
The Gunners are said to have stepped up their interest in the experienced Spanish international, following the news that he has become unhappy with life at the Bernabeu after the signing of Keylor Navas in goal may have pushed him down to third choice in the club’s pecking order.
Although Casillas has not been at his best for club or country in recent times, he has previously been regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world for many years, and up there with the best of all time to play for Real Madrid and Spain.
The 33-year-old has a highly impressive trophy haul to show for his career so far, and he could be a great addition for Arsene Wenger’s side if he can regain his best form, providing a good, short-term alternative to the young and inconsistent Wojciech Szczesny.
Other reports claim that Arsenal are also close to signing another goalkeeper in David Ospina, so it remains to be seen how the three shot-stoppers will rank in Wenger’s plans for next season.
