The Gunners hoping the presence of Ozil can convince Khedira to sign.
Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira is a transfer target for Arsenal and the club are hoping Mesut Ozil can convince his fellow German to sign, according to talkSPORT.
The two Germany internationals played together for three years at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu – before Ozil’s £42.4m switch to the Gunners – and are of course national teammates as well.
Khedira is available to sign from Madrid as the 27-year-old is about to enter the final year of his current contract with Los Blancos and therefore the Spanish giants either have to sell this summer, or risk losing the player on a free transfer in 2015.
The midfield ace spent most of the last season on the sidelines after suffering a cruciate ligament injury in November 2013, but returned to first team action towards the end of the campaign and did enough to convince Joachim Loew to include him in his 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup.
Arsene Wenger is on the search for a holding player to protect the back four and partner the more creative sources of either Aaron Ramsey or Jack Wilshere in central midfield.
Vice-captain Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini were both deployed in the role last season, but both failed to live up to expectations for different reasons.
Khedira has been with Los Merengues since the summer of 2010, when current Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho signed him from Stuttgart and has since played 144 games in all competitions for the club, winning La Liga, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey.
