Gunners may return with Suarez bid in January claims Molby.
Arsenal could bid for £100m-rated Liverpool striker Luis Suarez in January, according to former Reds star Jan Molby.
Suarez, 26, went public with his desire to leave Anfield for Champions League football in the summer but Liverpool refused to sell the Uruguayan, despite two bids from Arsenal – the latter of £40m and £1.
The Reds’ stubbornness has paid handsome dividends and Suarez has shot to the top of the Premier League goal-scoring charts with 13 goals in nine games since his return from suspension, including a stunning four-goal haul in Wednesday’s 5-1 victory over Norwich.
The controversial former Ajax forward has been linked with a mega-money move to Real Madrid in January but Molby believes a bid from closer to home is possible next month.
“He is now up there with the very best players in the world. Frank Ribery has had a particularly good season playing for the best team around but compared to Suarez he is one-dimensional,” Molby wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.
“Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi play in a league that is weaker but their goal-scoring records probably just put them ahead of Suarez at present.
“Suarez is the best attacker in the Premier League, although Sergio Agüero is running him close.
“His value to Liverpool must be £100m but who knows what other clubs now value him at.
“I expect one of two clubs to have a nibble in January and I wouldn’t rule out Arsenal being one of those.
“Arsenal have realised that spending big money gets you the best players.
“But the most impressive thing about all of this is that Liverpool have kept a truly world class player at the club, even without being able to offer Champions League football.
“Credit must go to Liverpool – and the senior figures at the club – for standing firm in the summer. If you look at the top 50 players in the world, Suarez must be the only one who is not playing in the Champions League.”
