Bender has been on Arsene Wenger’s radar for some time now, but the latest news means that he could turn his attentions toward Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin instead.
The La Liga giants are currently under a transfer embargo until 2016, but have identified the 25-year-old as a top target.
Arsenal also looked at Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan during the January transfer window, but after failing to make a concrete move for him it now appears that Schneiderlin is a more realistic option.
The Gunners are confident of winning the race to sign him, too, despite reported interest from the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham.
