Arsenal centre back Per Mertesacker has retired from international football, report Sky Sports, with the former Werder Bremen man hanging up his international boots as a World Cup winner.
Mertesacker becomes the third member of Joachim Low’s World Cup winning squad to retire from international duty, following captain Phillip Lahm and striker Miroslav Klose, who broke the World Cup goalscoring record in Brazil.
Gunners fans will be hoping that Mertesacker is able to step up his performances at club level even further without the distraction of international duty, having formed a fine partnership with Laurent Koscielny at the heart of Arsene Wenger’s defence.
