Though he’s expected to miss Arsenal’s Champions League opener, Per Mertesacker is fine.
Arsenal center back Per Mertesacker was involved in a car accident but won’t be gone from Emirates Stadium for long.
According to the Metro, the 30-year-old German defender was unhurt after getting into an accident during a rainstorm on the M1. Though he was reportedly “shaken,” the Arsenal veteran suffered no injuries and will reportedly return to the club for training this weekend.
Mertesacker had already been ruled out of Arsenal’s upcoming Champions League match against Dinamo Zagreb due to a virus.
Arsenal first signed Mertesacker to a four-year deal on a free transfer back in 2011 following an impressive career with Werder Bremen in Bundesliga.
Metersacker had 104 caps for the German national team from 2002 to 2014 and won third-place medals in the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups. Following Germany’s World Cup win in 2014, Mertesacker retired from international football.
