Manchester United may be set to miss out on the signing of Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen after reports of interest from AS Roma, according to CaughtOffside.
The Belgian centre-back has been strongly linked with an exit from the Emirates Stadium this summer after falling down the pecking order at the club, with Arsene Wenger preferring a partnership of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in central defence.
This had seen Vermaelen emerge as a surprise target for rivals United, but with the Gunners keen to postpone a deal that would see him join another Premier League side, it seems there has been growing interest from abroad.
The likes of Napoli and Inter Milan have also been linked with the 28-year-old in the past, and Italy could still be his destination as Roma eye him as a potential replacement for Chelsea and Manchester City target Mehdi Benatia.
The Moroccan defender was a top performer for Rudi Garcia’s side last season and is now attracting plenty of interest in this transfer window, leaving the club to consider new signings to come in in his place, with Vermaelen looking a good option at around £11m.
