Gunners demand United ace in return for big Belgian.
Arsenal are reported to be interested in signing Nani from Manchester United, in exchange for Thomas Vermaelen.
Manchester United’s move for Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has hit a stumbling block. Reports in The Daily Star have revealed that the Gunners are viewing the Red Devils’ interest in the Belgian as a chance to sign their winger Nani, with manager Arsene Wenger demanding the latter in an exchange deal.
The Portuguese failed to show much spark in his handful of performances for the Greater Manchester side last season, and with Louis van Gaal’s arrival at Old Trafford, it is understood that Nani may be pushed further down the pecking order. Hence, Arsenal’s demand signals a golden opportunity for United to get rid of the underperformer and get a good player in return.
Meanwhile, the news leaves Vermaelen’s departure in limbo with the Belgian unlikely to become the first choice for the centre back position at the Emirates anytime soon. Wenger is known to have placed his faith in the duo of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, and thus it will be good for the Belgian if he can prise a move away from the north London club soon.
