Arsenal rivalled by Atletico de Madrid in chase for SC Freiburg wonderkid’s signature.
Atletico de Madrid are the latest team to express an interest in signing 19 year-old Matthias Ginter from SC Freiburg, according to German publication Sportal.
The Germany under-21 international has tended to be deployed in central defence for Freiburg, but began his career as a centre forward, and is equally capable in either a holding role or as a box to box midfielder.
Comfortable with the ball at his feet, Ginter is a fine passer of the ball at both short and long range, and his good technique – likely down to his upbringing as a forward player – makes him a great proponent of the modern defensive footballer.
Ginter is 6’1″ tall, and whether he plays in defence or midfield he would add height and physicality to the team he elects to sign for this summer.
It is certainly an aspect for which Arsenal have earned criticism, with no orthodox defensive midfielder in the Gunners squad in the last few years – arguably since the days of Gilberto Silva and Mathieu Flamini, with Alex Song tending to neglect his work tracking back when at the club.
Atletico de Madrid have money to spend this summer, having sold Radamel Falcao to AS Monaco for a colossal fee, and look to be attempting to invest those funds in one of European football’s top young talents.
