Following an injury, Arsenal probably hoped they could wait for Carvalho’s price tag to drop. Will the price climb higher now that there’s a new suitor?
Despite a recent injury that is expected to sideline him for several months, the interest from big clubs – including Arsenal – in William Carvalho has not diminished, and a La Liga giant is about to turn a wholesale bid into a transfer war.
According to the Metro, Real Madrid have thrown their hats into the ring for the 23-year-old Portuguese defensive midfielder from Sporting Lisbon. Though Arsenal thought they could secure a transfer for just £18 million after Carvalho suffered a stress fracture injury, the release clause on Carvalho’s contract is estimated at £25 million – a number Real Madrid is more than capable of matching.
The 2013-14 Primeira Liga Breakthrough Player of the Year, Carvalho has made 30 appearances for Sporting Lisbon and scored 5 goals.
Carvalho was a member of Portugal’s Under-21 European Championship run, but missed on a critical sudden-death penalty kick that gave the victory to Sweden. He was named the Player of the Tournament for his efforts.
The Metro also reported that Atletico Madrid are preparing a bid for Carvalho’s transfer.
