Arsenal look to have switched their focus from Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira to Sporting Lisbon youngster William Carvalho as they chase new signings in midfield this summer.
According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, the Gunners have had a £23m bid for Carvalho rejected by the club, who are determined to keep him unless clubs match their asking price of £35m for the highly-rated midfield starlet.
The 22-year-old has been strongly linked with both Chelsea and Manchester United in recent times after emerging as one of the most promising young players in Europe, and Arsenal now look ready to go head-to-head with their rivals to secure his signature.
Arsene Wenger is known to be keen on bringing in a new top-class addition in the middle of the park this summer, having been linked with the likes of Khedira and Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.
Carvalho could be another good alternative for the north London side, and landing him ahead of their title rivals would certainly be a big boost for Wenger ahead of the new season.
