Former striker says Wenger supporters are ‘deluded’.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger would have been sacked were it not for his “unique position”, club legend Ian Wright has said.
The Frenchman has usually been able to rely on the unwaivering public support of his former charges since taking charge of the Gunners, but Wright told Absolute Radio that anyone still supporting Wenger is deluded.
He branded fans who gather behind the ‘In Arsene We Trust’ slogan as the “deluded ones” who are “out in the wilderness”.
Wright also suggested that Wenger was lucky to still have a job.
He said: “I wouldn’t say ‘surely he has to go’, but it is a unique position he’s in because I think any manager in any country in any world with a record like this and no prospects of light at the end of the tunnel, they would’ve been gone.”

In a veiled criticism of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, club legend Ian Wright says that fans hiding behind the ‘In Arsene We Trust’ slogan are ‘deluded’.
While Wright did not call for Wenger’s sacking outright in the interview with Absolute Radio, he did hint that any other manager of a top club who had failed to deliver a trophy in 8 years would have been sacked by now.
The former striker joins a host of high-profile figures who have criticised Wenger following the embarrassing League Cup loss at League Two Bradford, including ex-midfielder Mark Robson and twit-aholic Piers Morgan.
Wenger has money to spend in January and is likely to be given the winter transfer window to bring in new players in a bid to turn Arsenal’s season around.
But if the Frenchman fails to inspire Arsenal back towards the summit of the Premier League table, the voices calling for his dismissal will continue grow.
