Man United have also been linked with an interest in the former Athletic Bilbao ace, but it is Arsenal who have made the only actual enquiry, according to a source, as reported by the Mirror.
According to the same source, Arsene Wenger has made no official bid for the player, but he has made his interest clear in the striker as he continues to search for another option up front.
Arsenal have been linked with the likes of Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema this summer, but they may well be forced to look elsewhere.

Wenger also moved to play down comments made by director Lord Harris, where he claimed that the Gunners were capable of breaking their club transfer record this summer.
