France star linked with Gunners move.
Arsenal are hopeful of signing Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane this summer, according to CaughtOffside.
The 21-year-old, who played five games for France at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, is rated as one of the best defenders of his generation.
However, Real seem prepared to sell him, as he does not currently command a place in their first XI, with Pepe and Sergio Ramos generally preferred at centre-back.
Arsenal are reportedly closing in on agreeing a £23.5m transfer fee, although the deal is likely to include a buy-back clause to give Real the option of re-signing him in the future.
CaughtOffside claims that the Gunners have already agreed personal terms with Varane, who has previously been linked with Chelsea, Manchester United and Juventus.
Varane would become the third Frenchman in Arsenal’s backline, joining Laurent Koscielny and recent signing Mathieu Debuchy at the Emirates Stadium.
