Gunners keen to replace Sagna with international teammate.
Arsenal have made contact with Newcastle United regarding a potential move for France defender Mathieu Debuchy, according to Sky Sports.
The Gunners are in need of a new right-back following Bacary Sagna’s free transfer to Manchester City.
Debuchy, 28, could be seen as an improvement on Sagna, 31.
The Magpies star is over two years younger and has been selected to start ahead of Sagna in three of France’s four games at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
No deal is expected to be completed until France’s World Cup campaign is over, which could be as early as tomorrow night, unless Les Bleus can overcome Germany in the last eight.
Debuchy signed a five-and-a-half-year contract when he joined Newcastle from Lille in January 2013 for a fee in the region of £5m.
He has made 43 Premier League appearances for Newcastle.
However, he has openly said that he is keen to play in the Champions League – a tournament which Arsenal have qualified for 17 seasons in a row.
