Arsenal are preparing a large deal to secure Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, and could more than double previous estimates.
According to the Metro and Bleacher Report, the Gunners are increasing their interest in the 27-year-old Frenchman, with the possibility of a major transfer bid possible. Recent reports indicated that Benzema would be available for sale at £17.8 million, but between Real Madrid’s deafening silence and recent comments from Benzema’s agent, a move for anything less than the alleged £40 million asking price might be a waste of time.
After winning Ligue 1 Top Goal Scorer honors and scoring 37 goals during his last two seasons with Lyon from 2007 to 2009, Real Madrid bought the French superstar for reportedly over €35 million. After a disappointing first season in Spain, Benzema began living up to his big-time contract by scoring 79 goals over the next 161 appearances.
Benzema has scored double-digit league goals and 20 total goals in each of the last five seasons and in seven of the last eight. He is a three-time French Player of the Year and led Lyon to four straight Ligue 1 Championships during his first four seasons with the club.
