Gunners join Liverpool and Spurs in pursuit of Ajax’s Toby Alderweireld.
Arsenal have joined the race for Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld, according to Dutch source Ad.nl.
The versatile Belgium international has also been linked with moves to Liverpool and Tottenham, after rejecting a switch to Norwich City earlier in the summer.
The Gunners are said to have spoken to the Eredivisie champions about the versatile defender and sent a representative to Holland to discuss a deal with former Arsenal star Marc Overmars, who is now technical director at the Amsterdam ArenA.
Atletico Madrid are keen on the 24-year-old but Overmars confirmed that Atletico’s offer was rejected.
“We have rejected the offer from Atletico Madrid for Toby Alderweireld,” the former Netherlands international said.
“We were contacted this weekend but it was not considered sufficient for a player of the national team of Belgium.”
However, news of Arsenal’s interest in the centre-half was rubbished by Belgian journalist Sven Claes, who has previously kept Premier League fans up-to-date on Alderweireld’s future:
Arsenal heeft zich niet gemeld bij Ajax voor Alderweireld. Onzin. – Arsenal haven’t contacted Ajax for Alderweireld. Nonsense. #AFC
