Arsenal’s first choice goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has said that he is relishing the battle for his shirt with new signing David Ospina in the coming season, according to the Daily Mail, with the Colombian stopper having arrived from OGC Nice this summer as the club’s new back-up.
Szczesny had previously been competing with compatriot Lukasz Fabianski for his place in the team, but he has now departed to Swansea City on a free transfer in search of first team football, opening the door for Ospina, who should provide a step up in the quality of competition for Szczesny.
Ospina had a fine season for Ligue 1 side Nice last season, being key to the club’s narrow escape from relegation to the French second tier, and followed that up with a string of excellent displays for World Cup surprise package Colombia.
Szczesny, however, is relishing the challenge and has said that he is looking forward to the battle with Ospina:
“I love a challenge.”
“I was expecting someone to come because Lukasz has left for Swansea and I wish him all the best. I knew someone would come in. I’m just going to do the same thing over again, I’m going to try my best in every game and every week in training. Hopefully that will be enough.”
Neither ‘keeper was involved during the weekend’s Emirates Cup, which saw youngster Damian Martinez take up the position between the sticks, but he is likely to return to the Under 21 squad or go out on loan for the season.
