Chelsea has just been crowned as Premier League champions, and they are looking to defend their title as the transfer window approaches.
The Blues have a bright future and will look to make their next offseason count, and Merson recommended that they sign Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, who is widely expected to leave for greener pastures.
Benteke is currently being pursued by Liverpool, who finished in a disappointing sixth place after being blown out, 6-1, in their season finale against Stoke City.
Merson is advising Chelsea to seriously consider Benteke and part ways with French international Loic Remy in the meantime.
“Benteke ticks all the boxes. That is one position they definitely need, especially with Drogba going. I don’t think Remy is that good. If you played Remy for 10 games I don’t think they would win the league,” Merson said to the Daily Star.
Remy was able to score seven goals in six games started. However, it’s hard to argue that Chelsea should sign Benteke, as he scored 42 goals in 88 appearances for Aston Villa and would instantly upgrade Chelsea’s scoring attack.
