Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour is of the belief new Manchester United signing Anthony Martial will not live up to his staggering price tag.
United paid an eye-opening £36m up front of the AS Monaco ace, but it has been reported the fee could increase to as much as £58m including bonuses and add-ons.
The 19-year-old has just 52 Ligue 1 appearances under his belt, and the man known as the ‘Romford Pele’ says he does not expect the France international to live up to the hype.
“Will Martial succeed? I look forward to seeing him play, but I think it’s going to be a miss, because the money they’ve spent is an unbelievable amount,” Parlour is quoted as saying by The Daily Mail.
“For a 19-year-old kid, he’s not proven.
“If he proves to be like a Thierry Henry, which is what a lot of people are saying, then he could obviously be a great signing, but I think it is a massive gamble to take on a 19-year-old kid.
“With the money they’ve put out, I could be totally wrong, but I’m going to say miss on that one.”
The youngster scored 11 goals in Ligue 1 during stints with Lyon and Monaco and made his senior debut for France against Portugal last weekend.
Martial is expected to be thrown straight into the deep end against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday.
