Manchester United
However you look at it, Manchester United are arguably the most in need of signing Alexis Sanchez by quite some distance. New manager Louis van Gaal will leave his role as Netherlands boss after this summer’s World Cup and take on a squad badly lacking in quality options in the wide areas, as well as arguably needing a little more upfront should they choose to play the Chilean there.
The likes of Nani, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia have badly underperformed for the last two seasons, providing neither goals nor assists on a regular enough basis for a club of United’s level. Sanchez would be a major improvement on either side of the pitch for the Red Devils, or could even fill the role of Wayne Rooney in behind Robin van Persie. The England international’s form is something of a concern for United, and one feels that it would be a bigger priority for van Gaal to bring in a player who could get the best out of van Persie, who single-handedly fired the club to the Premier League title in 2012/13.
Rooney may be more of a natural striker than Sanchez, but actually his goals return for the last two seasons is not great, with 16 and 19 respectively in 2013 and 2014. Sanchez’s intelligence of movement and work-rate would make him an upgrade on almost all the attacking players currently on the books at United, and it is hard to argue against van Gaal giving the go-ahead for a big-money bid to beat their rivals to his signature.
Crucially as well, United need a signing like this to provide a feel-good factor around Old Trafford again after last season’s highly disappointing campaign under David Moyes.
