The Swiss international, 23, has been linked with a host of top clubs in recent times due to a lack of regular first-team action at current club Bayern, where he faces a great deal of competition for places.
Arsenal had recently emerged as strong suitors for his signature, while Liverpool were also strongly linked with him back in the summer.
However, Roma are keen to strengthen their attack this January and see the former FC Basel prospect as a player who could make a top class addition on the cheap this season.
