Arsenal’s pursuit for a centre forward has been one of the sagas to dominate this summer’s transfer window landscape, but new light has been shed on their attempts to sign Mario Balotelli from AC Milan today, by talkSPORT journalist Adrian Durham.
Durham, in Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, suggests that he had been told by an important official within the Italian FA that the Gunners had made an offer of just £10 million for Balotelli in an attempt to capitalise on the poor season of AC Milan and dreadful World Cup campaign endured by Cesare Prandelli’s men.
As suggested by Durham, the offer is reminiscent of last summer, when the Gunners made a bizarre bid of £40,000,001 for Liverpool forward Luis Suarez, an offer rejected out of hand by the Anfield club.
AC Milan seem to have been similarly dismissive of the Gunners’ advances, with Balotelli appearing to be no closer to being an Arsenal player despite some reports suggesting that the former Manchester City man was keen on the move.
Arsene Wenger seems desperate to bring in another senior centre forward for the 2014/15 campaign, having relied on Yaya Sanogo and Nicklas Bendtner as cover for lone striker Olivier Giroud, who seemed spent by the time a long season had drawn to a close and the former Montpellier man having been afforded little opportunity for a rest.
