Arsenal are to bid £6m for Argentina international midfielder Lucas Biglia, who currently plays for Anderlecht.
The tough tackling player – who has recently broken into his country’s national squad – told the media earlier this month of his intense desire to prove himself in one of Europe’s top leagues.
“I think I have ended my cycle at Anderlecht and I want to do something new,” Biglia was quoted as saying in Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad.
“The board know what I want to do.
“I know that playing for the Argentina national side means I get plenty of exposure and opens lots of doors.
“Sometimes I feel I have to do more because I am playing in Belgium.
“I am aware that it would be easier if I was playing in a different league.”
Arsene Wenger knows that with Alex Song likely to depart for the African Cup of Nations halfway through the season, and Denilson on loan at Sao Paulo, he will be short of anchor midfield players.
Lucas Biglia could be the man to fulfil that midfield destroyer role – a position that has almost been vacant since the days of Mathieu Flamini.
Sky Sports have also suggested Liverpool are interested in Biglia, but he appears more likely to join the Gunners at Emirates Stadium.
