The 32-year-old is thought to be on the outs in the Spanish capital, and is apparently keen on making a return to England before hanging up his boots.
Reports close to the player suggest that Arsenal are keen to make an offer for his signature, but may face some significant competition from Italian giants Napoli.
Armed with a wealth of domestic and European experience, he would come relatively cheaply at just £3.6m.
