Cole received huge amounts of abuse from the Emirates Stadium following the deal and was dubbed ‘Cashley’ as it was perceived the left-back had only moved for higher wages.
Whatever the reasons were Gunners manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that allowing the former England international to leave is one of the regrets of his career.
“[Selling Cole was] A regret of my career,” Wenger says in Amy Lawrence’s new book ‘Invincible’, as quoted by the Guardian.
“He left on a misunderstanding between his agent and the club.
“[He was] A fantastic fighter as well. The rest of his career has shown how big a player he is. It should have been here.”
Cole went onto win the league title with the Blues in 2010 (the fourth of his career), as well as three more FA Cups (he has the all-time record with seven), the League Cup, Europa League and Champions League.
