Arsenal have reportedly joined the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United in the chase for AS Roma defender Mehdi Benatia after news that he has rejected a new contract offer from the Italian side.
With the Gunners seeking a replacement for Thomas Vermaelen in defence, Gazzetta dello Sport claims that they are the latest side to show a strong interest in the talented Moroccan international, who was one of the most in-form defensive players in Europe last season.
The likes of Kostas Manolas of Olympiacos and Manchester City starlet Matija Nastasic have also been linked with Arsenal in recent times, but Benatia’s potential availability could now make him Arsene Wenger’s top target to strengthen his back four.
Valued at around £30m, Benatia would be the latest big-money signing after Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez to move to the Emirates Stadium in recent years.
