The Portuguese international has long been tracked by some top clubs, with Chelsea and Manchester United also known to be big admirers of his.
However, a move to Arsenal is thought to be edging closer, with additional claims that Arsene Wenger could be ready to splash the cash on a number of other players this January.
Wenger is quoted as saying: “There is a need there [to buy], but the right opportunity has to come up.
“If you look at the number of games some players played and the injuries we have with [Jack] Wilshere, [Aaron] Ramsey and [Mikel] Arteta, we’re a bit short at the moment in midfield.”
