The Gunners were 3-0 up and cruising against the Belgian champions before disaster struck and they collapsed to a frustrating 3-3 draw, with the lack of defensive quality and depth available to Wenger once again being made abundantly clear by relatively ordinary opposition.
Vlaar is out of contract at Villa Park at the end of the season but the West Midlands club are desperate to keep him, but with both Arsenal and Manchester United interested in the Dutch international it may well be that Paul Lambert’s side have to cash in on Vlaar in January.
