How the Gunners rated from at Wembley.
Arsenal eventually triumphed in the FA Cup semi-final against holders Wigan Athletic, but it went down to a penalty shootout at Wembley Stadium.
The Gunners were shoddy from the start and when Per Mertesacker brought down Callum McManaman and Jordi Gomez converted it, things looked bad for the north Londoners.
However, Mertesacker equalised late on and sent the tie into extra-time and when it reached penalties Arsene Wenger’s men triumphed.
Here’s how they rated at Wembley.
Lukasz Fabianski – 8
A solid game for the Pole when filling in for the usual Wojciech Szczesny and made a couple of sharp blocks, but could do nothing about Jordi Gomez’s penalty. But was heroic in the shootout and saved the game his side.
Bacary Sagna – 6
Did not get forward as well as usual, but defended solidly enough and was good cover for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain so the Englishman could break forward.
Per Mertesacker – 6
It looked as if the Germany international had cost his team the result when clumsily bringing down McManaman for a penalty, but made up for things when scoring a late equaliser.
Thomas Vermaelen – 5
Another poor display from the club captain as the Gunners were continuously exposed down their left-hand side with McManaman constantly threatening.
Nacho Monreal – 5
Really does not look good for the north Londoners and an alternative to the Spaniard is going to be needed as he was second best to Wigan’s players before going off with an injury.
