Shaqiri has come onto the Gunners’ radar.
Bayer Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri has played second fiddle to Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben since moving from FC Basel and now Arsenal want the Swiss attacker, reports Infoticker.
The Gunners are preparing to offer the Bundesliga champions £12.7m for the Switzerland international in the January transfer window, despite the 21-year-old having only transferred to the Allianz Arena a little over 12 months ago.
Shaqiri helped Bayern win the treble of German league and cup and the Champions League in 2012/13 and has scored 10 goals and provided 15 assists in all competitions.
The forward is contracted until 2016 however and therefore negotiations could prove difficult unless the north London club bid a significant amount for the player.
Attacking midfield is also not necessarily an area that Arsene Wenger needs to improve the side, with Mesut Ozil having arrived on transfer deadline day and stars such as Santi Cazorla, Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott already at the Emirates Stadium.
The talent and relative cheapness of Shaqiri would be difficult to pass up on though, but the side do perhaps need to strengthen in other departments more urgently.
Any injuries to the back four would leave Wenger’s men looking weak in defence and it is a similar story in defensive midfield, whilst there are still concerns over the capabilities of goalkeeper Wojniech Szczesny.
Another striker would also be a welcome acquisition as although Olivier Giroud is in fine form, the back-up of Nicklas Bendtner and Yaya Sanogo is hardly going to strike fear into opponents.
