Arsenal are set to go head-to-head with their bitter North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur for the signing of French midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, according to reports from the Express.
The Gunners are ready to make a serious bid for the Southampton star, as they look for alternative options alongside their reported pursuits of German central midfield duo Sami Khedira and Lars Bender.
Tottenham had been considered as favourites to land the Frenchman, with new Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino having enjoyed a good relationship with the 24 year-old during his time in charge of the Saints.
Schneiderlin has enjoyed a meteoric rise, along with his club, having spent time in League One with the club after signing from Strasbourg in his homeland – such was the player’s success that he was a late call-up by Didier Deschamps for the French squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Both North London teams are desperate to strengthen their midfield options this summer, with Arsenal feeling that they are one defensive midfielder short of having the central area to challenge for major honours next season.
Tottenham, meanwhile, have plenty of options in that area of the pitch – but none of Moussa Dembele, Etienne Capoue, Sandro and Paulinho have impressed for anything more substantial than fits and starts during their time at White Hart Lane, leading to Pochettino to search for something more substantial.
