Arsenal are ready to challenge Premier League rivals Manchester United for the signing of Borussia Dortmund centre back Mats Hummels, report the Daily Mail, with the newly crowned World Cup winner allegedly valued at around £25 million by the Bundesliga club.
The Gunners now have an extra £15m to play with in the transfer market after the sale of club captain and Belgian centre back Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona was confirmed, with Arsene Wenger likely to want another centre back with youngsters Calum Chambers and Ignasi Miquel now his only cover in the middle of defence.
However, moving for Hummels would probably wipe out the rest of his summer transfer kitty, whilst it would also mean breaking up the impressive partnership between Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker that really flourished last season.
United, meanwhile, have been linked with Hummels throughout the summer as new manager Louis van Gaal looks for the right defenders to replace experienced duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, both of whom have departed Old Trafford on free transfers this summer.
