The Gunners scouts were present alongside those from Manchester United, Arsenal, Queen’s Park Rangers, PSV Eindhoven, Ajax, Feyenoord, Villarreal, Bayer Leverkusen and FC Cologne – all to see one player: William Carvalho.
The defensive midfielder has made something of a breakthrough for Sporting Club de Portugal this season, making his national team debut in the Portuguese playoff victory over Sweden.
Carvalho came on as a substitute in the second leg of the finely poised tie and helped Portugal take control of the tie despite the high pressure situation of his debut.
The 21 year-old is not particularly quick across the ground, but is intelligent with his positioning, mature beyond his years, strong in the tackle and rotates possession well with simple passing.
He could develop into a tremendous anchor player – as Sporting Lisbon will be well aware, having inserted a €45 million buyout clause into his contract.
