Wenger has made Alves a priority as he seeks a cover for the injured Mathieu Debuchy following Calum Chambers’ transition to centre-back.
The Brazilian is out of contract at the end of the season and already has a number of admirers.
Another player in Arsenal’s sights is Pedro, who is wanted by both Van Gaal and Brendan Rodgers.
The winger is expected to move on following the arrival of Luis Suarez, and Wenger is expected to make a £24m move for him after bringing former teammate Alexis Sanchez to the club this summer.
