Bender is statistically superior to Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira, who has also been linked with the Gunners over the last few months, winning more tackles, making more blocks, and more clearances.
The 25-year-old is one of the best players in the world for his position, and would be the perfect solution to Arsene Wenger’s current issues, which include an injury to captain Mikel Arteta, and the uninspiring performances of his replacement, Mathieu Flamini.
A 17-time German international, who missed his country’s World Cup success last summer through injury, he joined Leverkusen from 1860 Munich in 2009, and has since made almost 200 appearances.
Wenger’s other potential targets include Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho, and Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin, but Bender is perhaps the more established option, while his wage demands will be lower than his countryman Khedira. His twin brother Sven, who plays for Borussia Dortmund, is another option.
