Arsenal are reportedly unwilling to meet Borussia Dortmund’s £20m asking price for Greek defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Gunners are in the market for new signings at the back after selling Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona earlier this summer, and Sokratis has emerged as the latest candidate to come in to Arsene Wenger’s back four.
The 26-year-old has been a fine signing for Dortmund after moving to the club last year, though he may now face being third choice as the likes of Mats Hummels and Neven Subotic return to full fitness.
Still, Sokratis remains a key player for Jurgen Klopp’s side and it may take offers of around £20m to persuade them to part company with the player, while Arsenal are only willing to pay closer to £12m.
With not long left in the transfer window, Arsenal may have to pay up to bring in the players they need as the fragility of their squad has been exposed with recent injuries.
