Manchester United are ready to seal the deal for Arsenal’s tough tackling centre-back and current skipper Thomas Vermaelen after the Belgian’s World Cup campaign ends, reports the Daily Mirror.
The 28-year old is very frustrated at being a mere backup player at Arsenal over the last 18 months, and is keen to change clubs to get more regular football.
The Red Devils are closing in on agreeing a £10 million deal with Arsenal for the former Ajax man, who has just one more year left on his deal in North London. Man United boss Louis Van Gaal is desperate to strengthen the Red Devils’ backline and probably believes that Vermaelen’s experience could be of good use at Old Trafford.
Arsenal too could be happy with the deal struck for the want away player, but are now faced with the prospect of signing another capable centre-back to backup the likes of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.
United were reportedly hoping for a £6 million deal, but the Gunners look set to get a fair price from their former arch rivals.
