Arsenal playmaker Santi Cazorla is interested in leaving the club and returning to La Liga, according to reports in the Daily Express, with Spanish champions Atletico Madrid leading the chase for the former Malaga man.
The 29 year-old midfielder arrived at the Emirates Stadium from Malaga in 2012 and has gone on to establish himself as a reliable and creative performer for Arsene Wenger’s men.
With the Gunners reportedly looking at investing in big money attacking midfield stars, such as Julian Draxler who they narrowly missed out on in January, Cazorla’s place in the team could soon be under threat, however.
This has led to interest from Diego Simeone and La Liga champions Atletico Madrid, who are resigned to losing a number of key players this summer, possibly including classy wide man and Turkish international Arda Turan.
Cazorla would offer a natural replacement for Turan but, even if the former Galtasaray man stays in the Spanish capital, Simeone will still need to strengthen his squad if they are to replicate the heroics of the 2013/14 season.
The report suggests that the Argentinian boss is weighing up an £18 million offer for Cazorla, a fee which would give them a healthy enough profit to consider allowing Cazorla to leave the club.
