Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere looks set to miss the start of the new Premier League season after suffering an ankle injury, according to reports.
The England international was left out of Arsenal’s side that defeated Chelsea 1-0 in the Community Shield and The Guardian reports Wilshere will likely be unavailable for Sunday’s clash with West Ham United.
Wilshere is understood to have suffered the injury during a training session on Saturday, and while Arsene Wenger commented that the midfielder would be forced out for ‘days’, reports suggest the injury is worse than first thought.
The 23-year-old has a history of ankle and foot issues and missed six months of last season after undergoing surgery on his left ankle.
With the Arsenal midfield impressing at Wembley on Sunday, Wilshere now has his work cut out to break back into Wenger’s starting XI when he regains full fitness.
The midfield three of Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin all put on solid shifts during Arsenal’s 1-0 win over the Blues and are expected to start against the Hammers next Sunday.
