Arsenal left back called up by England manager Roy Hodgson as Chelsea defender pulls out through injury.
Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs has been called up to the senior England squad after Chelsea star Ashley Cole was ruled out due to a rib injury.
The 24 year-old Gunners man has two caps for his country after earning a first call up in 2010, with the form of Cole, Everton full back Leighton Baines and his own fitness making it difficult to add to that number.
However, thanks to an injury free run of matches, in which he has overcome strong competition from January transfer window signing Nacho Monreal, Gibbs has developed into one of the best and most consistent players in the Arsenal squad – with perhaps only Aaron Ramsey, Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil competing for the standout performer of the season.
Both a great attacking threat and solid defender, Gibbs should make a more than able deputy for Ashley Cole in England’s final FIFA World Cup qualification games against Montenegro and Poland.
Whilst Baines is likely to start, Gibbs is unlikely to let anyone down should he be called upon.
