BFG confident the Gunners can still progress.
Per Mertesacker believes there is no reason why Arsenal cannot win at Bayern Munich for a second consecutive year, despite Wednesday’s disastrous Champions League defeat.
Ten-man Arsenal lost 2-0 to the Bavarians at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday and now face an uphill task to reach the quarter finals of the Champions League.
But the Gunners were in a similar position at this stage last year after losing 3-1 at home, but won 2-0 at the Allianz Arena.
Despite going out on away goals, the victory in Bavaria revitalised their season and a defiant Mertesacker says the Gunners can do the same again this season.
“We started really well and deserved one goal,” the German centre half insisted.
“We dropped and dropped after the red card. We kept our defensive spirit.
“We lost here 3-1 last year against Bayern Munich and went there and beat them and we are looking forward to Munich. Why can’t we get back in it?
“I think there is no doubt there was contact for the penalty. I don’t know if it was a red card because the ball was a long way from Wojciech Szczesny.”
