Both Bordeaux and Lorient have also expressed an interest in the 21-year-old, but Wenger would prefer the France Under-21 international to join an English club.
Before Neil Warnock’s departure Crystal Palace were in pole position to land Sanogo, but with that now looking unlikely Paul Lambert has moved ahead in the pursuit of the forward.
Burnley, Stoke City and Sunderland are also in the hunt, but it seems Villa are the favourites as Lambert looks to shake things up in the January transfer window.
To date Sanogo has scored just once for the Gunners – against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League – since joining on a free transfer from Auxerre in the summer of 2013.
