Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen has emerged as a key summer target for Zenit St. Petersburg, reports the Daily Mail.
The Belgian centre-back can’t get in the Arsenal team this season, behind the superb pairing of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny. Vermaelen has only made three starts in the Premier League all term, while Arsene Wenger’s first-choice pairing have marshalled the side to the top of the table, having conceded the second least amount of goals in the league.
Zenit already have Belgian internationals Nicolas Lombaerts and Axel Witsel in their squad, so could use the pair to convince 28-year-old Vermaelen to move to Russia.
The Russian transfer window is open until the end of February, so would still be allowed to sign Vermaelen if Arsenal sanctioned a transfer.
However, with the Gunners fighting on three fronts, Arsene Wenger will no doubt be determined to keep his squad intact for the remainder of the season.
The centre-back prides himself on his ability in the air, and the way he can pass the ball out from defence, but in the last 18 months he’s shown that he’s occasionally error prone.
