Arsenal are stepping up their interest in young Southampton full back Calum Chambers, according to the Mail, with talented German midfielder Serge Gnabry potentially heading in the other direction on a loan deal.
Despite being set to capture Newcastle United right back Mathieu Debuchy to become the club’s first choice replacement for Bacary Sagna, who abandoned ship in favour of Manchester City, Wenger is a keen admirer of the latest young defender to emerge from the St. Mary’s academy.
Wenger is believed to be willing to let Carl Jenkinson leave the club, either permanently or on a loan deal, which would open up space in his squad for Chambers to join.
The Gunners have plenty of previous form in signing youngsters from Southampton, with both Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain having signed from the club and developed into important members of the Emirates Stadium first team.
Ronald Koeman is thought to be unlikely to want Chambers to leave the club, but as with the likes of Rickie Lamber and Adam Lallana, he is confident that he can locate better players for the club for more reasonable prices than those being offered for their current squad.
The Dutchman is believed to have an interest in Serge Gnabry, the young Arsenal attacking midfielder who made his breakthrough into first team football last season and is an exciting German youth international.
