Arsenal are being linked with a surprise move for Atletico Madrid full-back Javier Manquillo, despite being on the verge of signing Newcastle United’s Mathieu Debuchy.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is keen on strengthening his full-back options following the departure of Bacary Sagna for Manchester City, and feels than the Spaniard could provide Debuchy with the perfect understudy.
Spanish newspaper AS suggest that the Gunners are about to step up their interest in the 20-year-old right-back, who is highly rated at the Vicente Calderon.
The Rojiblancos are desperate not to lose the youngster, who is contracted until 2018, but could be forced into a sale if the player demands to move to London.
Additional press reports suggest that the Spaniard was set to move to Marseille on loan until the end of next season, having already agreed terms with the Ligue 1 side, but a last minute call from Arsenal officials has prompted a change of heart.
Ivorian World Cup star Serge Aurier has also been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium, but Wenger is now believed to have set his sights on Debuchy and Manquillo, who has made six La Liga appearances so far in his career.
Having been capped at every international youth level between under-16’s and under-20’s, Manquillo is viewed as one of the brightest defensive prospects in Europe, and fits well with Wenger’s transfer policy of signing young talent.
