Rejoice Gooner fans! Sanchez will be back in action before you know it… just not before the season starts. How long can Arsenal go without him?
In a piece of bittersweet news for Arsenal fans, leading scorer Alexis Sanchez will return to the team on August 3rd – but will miss at least one game.
According to the Mirror, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger expressed confidence that the Gunners’ leading scorer would be back in early August. This latest declaration comes despite previous claims that the amount of rest Sanchez would need three or more weeks rest to recover from his strong performance in the 2015 Copa America.
Wenger makes it a policy to give significant rest to his players who perform in major summer tournaments and Sanchez was no exception.
“Alexis will be back on 3 August,” Wenger said. “Usually it takes three weeks to be competitive. With Alexis, it could be a bit less.
“He will certainly miss the first game… He is an important player for us and he showed he has the winning mentality when he took on the responsibility to take the last penalty in the Copa America final against Argentina.”
Sanchez led Arsenal with 16 league goals and 25 overall goals last season and played in all six games for Chile – the 2015 Copa America host nation – in the tournament, leading his country to its first ever Championship title after beating Argentina in a 4-1 shootout following a 0-0 draw. The Arsenal superstar kicked the game-sealing field goal to clinch Chile’s win.
