Reported Arsenal target and Swansea City centre back Ashley Williams looks likely to stay at the Liberty Stadium, according to the Daily Express, after his agent said that the club are unwilling to sell the Welsh international and that he would be happy to end his career at the club.
The former Stockport County and Hednesford Town man has been a mainstay for Swansea City since arriving from Edgeley Park in 2008, going on to captain the club as they earned promotion to the Premier League before lifting the 2013 League Cup and latterly playing in the Europa League.
Arsenal had been linked with a move for Williams, as manager Arsene Wenger looks for a centre back to challenge established first choice pairing Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, ahead of Thomas Vermaelen’s expected move to Manchester United.
Williams’ agent Jamie Moralee is quoted as saying:
“Swansea are very clear that Ashley is not for sale. Whatever offer comes in, he is not going to be sold.”
“If Ashley signs another contract at Swansea, he will probably end his career there. I’d like to think we can reach an agreement because that is Ash’s preferred option.”
If a new deal can be agreed between Williams and his club, then, it seems as though the centre back’s long term future will be at the South Wales club, but Moralee does not appear to entirely rule out the possibility of him moving elsewhere.
Whether Arsenal would be a destination that would interest seems uncertain, however, with him being unlikely to be able to break up the established partnership of Koscielny and Vermaelen at the heart of the Gunners’ defence.
